Update: Storms possible once again Thursday

Environment Canada is calling for severe weather again Thursday night, after the region was hit with storms on Wednesday.

A severe thunderstorm watch was put into effect for Sarnia-Lambton, Windsor-Essex, and Chatham-Kent, parts of Middlesex County, and Elgin County just before 4:45 p.m.

Shortly after 6:30 p.m., the watch was extended to London and the rest of Middlesex County, Oxford County, and the southern parts of Huron and Perth counties.

Later, severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for London-Middlesex, Western Lambton County, and Southern Huron County. Thunderstorm watches in Windsor-Essex and Chatham-Kent were also upgraded to thunderstorm warnings.

A tornado warning was also briefly in effect for Windsor-Essex.

By midnight, all warnings were lifted entirely, or replaced with severe thunderstorm watches.

The national weather agency said conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing damaging wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain.

The storms are expected to develop early Thursday evening over Lower Michigan before tracking into southwestern Ontario. The main threats are said to be damaging wind gusts of 100 to 120 km/h, and torrential rainfall producing local amounts of 50 to 75 mm over just a few hours.

There's also the possibility of nickel to ping pong ball size hail, and the risk of tornadoes.

Saturated ground may result in an increased likelihood of down trees in the event of damaging winds.
