UPDATE: Severe thunderstorms remain possible in southwestern Ontario

Environment Canada says there is still the potential for severe weather in portions of southwestern Ontario.

The national weather agency issued watches for the regions on Wednesday morning, but lifted the alerts at around 1:45 p.m.

A rainfall warning was then put into effect. As of 6:35 p.m., it was still active in Windsor-Essex, Chatham-Kent, London-Middlesex, Sarnia-Lambton, and Elgin.

Meteorologists were tracking thunderstorms over lower Michigan that could move into the area Wednesday morning and bring very strong wind gusts, nickel-sized hail, and heavy rain.

Another round of severe thunderstorms is possible during the late afternoon and overnight hours.

Areas that receive multiple thunderstorms may receive rainfall amounts of nearly 50 millimetres.

The agency warns residents strong wind gusts can cause property damage and tree damage.

Large hail can also cause damage to property.
