Wallaceburg's Murray Street Bridge reopens Sunday night

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent says the Murray Street Bridge in Wallaceburg will be opened to vehicular and pedestrian traffic this weekend.

Manager of Engineering Brendan Falkner said the bridge will open at around 7 p.m. on Sunday.

Falkner said the bridge rehabilitation is in the final stages of construction and the commissioning and testing of the bridge’s moveable span will begin on Friday at approximately 8 a.m.

"As part of this process, the bridge will be operated multiple times and there may be temporary delays for pedestrians crossing the bridge," said Falkner. "The Municipality appreciates the patience and cooperation of the residents in the Community of Wallaceburg during this project."

Chatham-Kent council approved the $1.9 million contract to repair the bridge after site inspections identified several conditional and operational issues that needed to be addressed in order to extend the bridge’s life expectancy and maintain public safety.

The work includes removing and replacing the specialized coating on the bridge deck and sidewalk, concrete repairs, repairing mechanical issues, as well as replacing the bridge’s hardware and software.
