Delayed sentencing hearing for Chatham shooter leaves co-accused in limbo

Two young women who were charged after a shooting in Chatham last year are being left in limbo as they wait for a resolution in their court case.

Brianna Gardiner, 19, and Rylie DeJonge-Vandusen, 20, both accused of attempted murder, were anticipating having their charges dropped Wednesday, following what police called a targeted shooting in January 2021.

Representatives for both Gardiner and DeJonge-Vandusen expressed their client's eagerness in having the matter move forward and come to a conclusion.

Terry St. Hill, 21, pleaded guilty on May 17, 2022 to killing a dog during the shooting in Chatham on January 26, 2021. According to previously published reports, he has not yet entered a plea on other charges, including discharging a firearm with the intent to endanger life.

The formal reading of the agreed statement of facts of the case and witness impact statements were expected to be read to the court during Wednesday's hearing.

However, the case was adjourned to provide more time to finalize the resolution.

St. Hill will return to court on September 26, where an agreed statement of facts will be entered. Another date will be set for Crown and defence submissions.

St. Hill remains in custody at a maximum-security correctional facility in Penetanguishene while he waits for his sentencing hearing.

Another suspect, now 18, who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is still in custody. A different 18-year-old male from Cambridge, whose name is also protected by law because he was a minor at the time of the incident, has been out on bail for about 15 months.

There are publication bans in place preventing more information from being made public to protect the identity of the victims.
