Chatham man arrested for threatening children with airsoft gun

It's a confrontation that sounds like it should be taking place between kids at the playground.

But in this case, it involves a grown man from Chatham.

A 25-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly threatened some children who were using squirt guns in Tecumseh Park in Chatham earlier this summer.

Chatham-Kent police said the man allegedly confronted the kids and pointed an airsoft pistol at them, demanding that they throw the squirt guns into the river.

As the children left the area, the man allegedly threatened to harm them if they came back.

Police said they were able to identify a suspect, but they couldn't find him, so they issued a warrant for his arrest.

Investigators said the man turned himself in just before noon on Tuesday and was charged with one count each of assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and four counts of uttering threats.

He was later released with conditions and a future court date of December 19, 2022.

Two arrests after police pull over stolen vehicle

A 28-year-old Chatham-Kent man is facing a long list of charges after police allegedly found him behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle in Chatham.

His passenger, a 52-year-old Chatham-Kent man, was also arrested and charged in the case.

Police said their investigation started when officers received a report over the noon-hour on Tuesday that a vehicle had been stolen from a residence on Dove Place in Chatham sometime overnight.

The information was shared with the entire police service and a senior officer who was driving in the area of Gray Street and Raleigh Street in Chatham at around 1:45 p.m. Tuesday spotted the stolen vehicle and called it in to front-line officers.

Uniformed officers managed to track the vehicle down and arrested the two people who were inside.

The officers believed the driver was impaired, so they arrested him and allegedly found some fentanyl in his possession. The police investigation also showed that the driver had previously been charged with "numerous" Highway Traffic Act and Criminal code offences that had led to multiple suspensions and prohibitions on his driver's license.

As a result, he was charged with more than a dozen new offences -- including drug possession, possession of stolen property, and impaired driving -- and was taken back to police headquarters pending a bail hearing.

His passenger was also charged with possession of stolen property and was taken back to police headquarters, then later released with a future court date.

The accused was wanted for theft, possession of stolen property, fraud, and unauthorized use of a credit card.

He was arrested and later released with a future court date.
