If you hear some fireworks on Monday, don't be alarmed because it might be the local Hindu community celebrating the Diwali holiday.
The Municipality of Chatham-Kent recently changed its bylaw to allow Diwali fireworks.
Hindu community spokesperson Vishal Patel told CK News Today there isn't anything officially organized by the Chatham-Kent Hindu community for Monday, the day of the municipal election, but individuals may celebrate in the comfort of their own homes.
Patel said a Diwali celebration is planned for October 29, 2022 at the Active Life Centre in Chatham from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. with noise-free fireworks at around 7:30 p.m.
Municipal administration is also investigating if other cultural community celebrations can be added to the newly amended fireworks bylaw and that information will be considered at a later date.
Currently, fireworks are only allowed on Victoria Day and the three days immediately preceding and following Victoria Day; Canada Day and the three days before and after Canada Day; New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day; and any other day proclaimed by council for the municipality as suitable for celebration with fireworks, such as Diwali.
