Chatham-Kent woman, Stoney Point man drown after canoe capsizes

A Chatham-Kent woman and a Stoney Point man who were both in their 20s have died after a tragic boating accident in Northern Ontario.

North Bay OPP said the two people who died were part of a group of four boaters who were in a canoe that capsized on Legrou Lake in East Mills Township on August 30.

OPP said two of the occupants were able to swim to shore, but two others drowned.

Police said one of them was found by neighbouring cottagers and life-saving techniques were attempted, but the person was later pronounced dead. The second person's body was retrieved by the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.

The two people who died were identified as 25-year-old Stephanie Imeson of Chatham-Kent and 27-year-old Derek Comartin of Stoney Point.

The Office of the Chief Coroner of Ontario and the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service have now taken the lead on the investigation.
