A 28-year-old Chatham man is facing impaired driving charges after he allegedly pulled into a police perimeter in Chatham late Wednesday night.
Chatham-Kent police said they were first called to the scene on Grand Avenue East near Memory Lane at around 10:20 p.m. and learned that a man who was pulling a cart on Grand Ave. had been hit by a vehicle that was trying to pass by on the left side.
The man who was hit was taken to the hospital with minor, non-life threatening injuries and there is no word on whether charges will be laid.
Police said about half an hour after police had set up a perimeter around the scene of that collision, a vehicle was seen entering the scene at a high rate of speed.
Investigators said the vehicle reportedly "screeched to a halt," adding that when officers approached the driver, they believed he was under the influence of alcohol, so he was arrested and taken back to police headquarters for breath tests.
A 28-year-old Chatham man was later charged with having a blood alcohol level above the legal limit. He was also charged with other offences under the Highway Traffic Act, the Cannabis Control Act, and the Liquor License Act.
The accused was later released with a future court date.
