CFIA recalls several brands of onions for potential salmonella (GALLERY)

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has issued a recall on several varieties of onions due to possible contamination.

The recall involves onions from Dorsey, MVP, Pier-C, and Riga Farms brands labelled "Product of Mexico". The CFIA said these onions may have been contaminated with salmonella.

The onions have been sold in Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, and Newfoundland and Labrador. The onions may have also been distributed elsewhere in Canada.

"These products may also have been sold in bulk or smaller packages with or without a label and may not bear the same brand or product names," read the recall notice. "The CFIA will continue its investigation into other possible importers, and additional recalls may follow."

The recall includes Dorsey Yellow Onions in a 10-pound mesh sack, MVP Yellow Onions in a 50-pound package, Pier-C White Onions in a two-pound bag, as well as a 25-pound bag, Pier-C Yellow Onions in a 25-pound bag, and a 40-pound bag; and Riga Farms Yellow Onions in a three-pound package.

All the varieties were sold between July 7 and October 28, 2021. Retailers, distributors, warehouses, and foodservice businesses are asked not to consume, serve, or sell the onions.

The CFIA said there were no reported illnesses connected to these onions.

If you have any of these onions, do not consume or serve. Either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund.

Complete information on the affected brand names, package sizes, and codes can be found on the CFIA's official recall website.
