UPDATE: Thousands of pounds of beef burn on Hwy 401 between Chatham and Tilbury

Provincial police have fully re-opened the eastbound Highway 401 between Tilbury and Chatham after a transport truck loaded with beef caught fire early Thursday morning.

OPP started diverting traffic off of the eastbound Hwy. 401 at Queen's Line (Exit 63) just after 5 a.m. for vehicle removal and cleanup, but police said the highway re-opened just before 12 p.m. Thursday.

Police said the tractor trailer, which was loaded with 44,000 pounds of beef caught fire near the 70 kilometer mark of the highway.

Officers said the driver managed to disconnect his truck from the trailer and no injuries were reported.
