Uptick in Sarnia-Lambton COVID cases Thursday

Lambton Public Health reported an uptick in COVID-19 infections Thursday.

The health unit said 26 new cases were confirmed for a total of 3,090 since March 2020. Cases considered resolved increased by 11 to 2,917, putting the number of active infections at 119, an increase of 15 over the last 24 hours.

To date, 249 cases have been identified as variants of concern. The death toll was unchanged at 54 and there was just one active outbreak at an unnamed workplace.

Lambton Medical Officer of Health Dr. Sudit Ranade said although the incidence rate of infection per 100,000 population has dropped over the last few weeks, we're not out of the woods yet.

"The numbers are trending downwards, on average we're getting fewer and fewer cases per day," said Dr. Ranade. "The seven day average is coming down so that's also a nice thing to see, but I think it's a question of whether or not it can be maintained."

Bluewater Health had nine COVID-positive patients in hospital, down one from Wednesday.
