Home improvements scam

Police in Chatham-Kent are warning homeowners to do their homework on home renovations contractors and never give them money ahead of a project.

Police said scammers are knocking on doors telling people they need new roofs, new driveways, or other upgrades done to their homes and are asking for cash upfront to buy supplies.

Police are urging the public to be careful because once they have your money, it's gone, because they never come back. Another trick police said the scammers use is to try to convince the homeowner they need more work done after the project is underway.

Police said homeowners should always get a couple of quotes if they need improvements done and ask family and friends to recommend qualified and reputable contractors.
