Teens carrying knives arrested in Chatham park

Two 13-year-old Chatham youths have been arrested and charged after they allegedly threatened a group of kids with knives and assaulted one of them.

Chatham-Kent police said they made the arrests after they were called to a disturbance at the Don Mahon Park on Wedgewood Avenue in Chatham at around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Police said their investigation showed that the two teens had allegedly threatened a group of kids in the park with knives. The two teens also allegedly punched and kicked one of the youths who was in the area.

Officers were able to track down the two teens a short time later and allegedly found several knives in their possession.

Both of the teens were charged with one count each of assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose along with five counts each of assault with a weapon and uttering threats.

They were later released to a parent pending a future court date.

Man hiding in a dumpster allegedly spit towards officers

A 34-year-old man of no fixed address has been arrested and charged with assaulting police and drug possession after an early morning run-in with the law in Chatham.

Police said they found the man hiding in a dumpster on Bloomfield Road in Chatham while they were responding to a 911 call from a man in crisis at around 4:30 a.m.

When the officers offered to help the man, he allegedly spit towards them, so they took him into custody.

Police said they also allegedly found some suspected cocaine on the man while they were searching him.

Delinquent drivers ticketed

Chatham-Kent police stopped another handful of drivers on Wednesday who were caught breaking the rules of the road.

Police said they stopped and charged one motorist with a school bus-related offence when they were watching traffic around Harwich Raleigh Public School Wednesday afternoon.

Officers also handed out five tickets to drivers for various Highway Traffic Act offences while they were conducting enforcement on Creek Line in Dover Township on Wednesday.

One of the drivers that was stopped -- a 29-year-old man -- was also charged with driving while under suspension. He is now required to attend Provincial Offences Court in May.
