Four people charged for 'illegal gathering' in vehicle

Four people from different households who were all caught riding together in a vehicle in Chatham have been charged under the Reopening Ontario Act.

They were each issued an $880 ticket as well.

Police said they charged the foursome after an officer spotted a suspicious vehicle on Grey Street in Chatham Wednesday morning, pulled it over in the area of Raleigh Street and Richmond Street and determined all four of the occupants lived in different residences.

One of the occupants, a 20-year-old London man, allegedly lied about his identity to the officer, so he was arrested and charged with obstructing police. He was later released pending a future court date.

Police said all four of the vehicle's occupants were charged with failing to comply with the Reopening Ontario (A Flexible Response to COVID-19) Act, 2020 for gathering with other people not in their household.
