Police said on September 17, the courthouse reported that the entire phone line was down. When Bell Canada employees were investigating the outage, they determined that the supply boxes had been damaged.

Two impaired driving arrests

An off-duty officer with a keen eye is getting the credit for tipping off police about an impaired driver.

Chatham-Kent police said the off-duty officer called in a possible impaired driver on River Line just before 6 p.m. Thursday.

Police later pulled the suspect's vehicle over and believed the man behind the wheel was driving while under the influence of alcohol, so they arrested him and took him back to headquarters for further testing.

As a result of the investigation, a 57-year-old man from West Lorne was charged with having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. He was later released with a future court date.

In a separate investigation, police arrested a 60-year-old man from Dresden after getting a call about a suspicious man sitting in a parking lot on King Street East in Chatham.

Police said that tip came in at around 7 p.m. Thursday, adding that when officers found the man, they saw that he was sitting in the driver's seat with the vehicle running and in reverse.

Police said they were were able to open the door and put the vehicle in park.

As a result of their investigation, police arrested the driver and took him back to police headquarters for breath tests because they believed he was in control of his vehicle under the influence of alcohol. The man was later charged with having a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit and released with a future court date.

Police said they are thankful for the tips that came in leading to these two arrests and they are also encouraging anyone who thinks they see someone driving while impaired to call 911 immediately to report it.
