A tentative agreement has been reached between Canada’s main automotive union and one of Detroit’s Big Three automakers.
The agreement between Unifor and Ford Motor Company includes $1.95 billion of investment for plants in Oakville and Windsor.
The company has made a commitment to the production of a 6.8-litre engine in Windsor.
"This is another home run for the facilities. Right now we build engines for Ford's most successful products, the F-150 trucks, the Mustang, the 6.8-litre will be just another step as we negotiate stability for this operation," said Unifor National President Jerry Dias.
Dias said this investment is expected to create more jobs in Windsor.
"We know that our members in Windsor will be employed for the long-term. We know that there will be incredible opportunities for young people in Windsor for quite a while," said Dias.
In Oakville, the company has agreed to a $1.8 billion investment in the plant to build five models of electric vehicles. The first electric vehicle is expected to roll off the line in 2025, the fifth one will be in production by 2028. Unifor has also secured the assembling of the batteries that will go into the vehicles.
"Today is about a vision, it's about a vision for our country, it's a vision for our industry," said Dias.
Union members will vote on the tentative three-year agreement on Sunday.
