More Huron Perth families unable to afford food

An anonymous donor is helping families in Huron and Perth Counties deal with the impacts of COVID-19.

Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) recently received a financial donation to support Huron County families dealing with the direct and indirect impacts of COVID-19.

Acting Public Health Manager Amy MacDonald said the money is critical for local families struggling with stress, anxiety and financial hardships, made worse by the COVID-19 pandemic

She said a growing number of local individuals and families who rely on minimum wage jobs, precarious work, and social assistance. are experiencing food insecurity. The United Way helped distribute a one-time grocery gift card for families to use at a local grocery store.

In June, the Huron Perth Public Health Board of Health endorsed a Basic Income program for all Canadians as a way of addressing the negative health, economic, and social impacts of income insecurity.

A recent Statistics Canada report indicates that the pandemic has led to an increase in the number of people, especially households with children, experiencing food insecurity.
