The United Way of Chatham-Kent is changing up its Operation Backpack program this year.
Normally, backpacks filled with grade-appropriate school supplies are handed out to kids in need, but this year, gift cards will be given out instead.
"This provides families with a very dignified means at being able to pick up all the items that are most meaningful for their kids," said Karyn O'Neil, director of community engagement. "In light of COVID and the school year, we're not really sure what those needs are going to be, so we think this is the best solution."
O'Neil said the gift cards also allow students to pick out the items they want and need for school.
"That's an exciting time of the year to be able to pick out the colours that are your favourite. And maybe they don't need a backpack, maybe what they need is a pair of sneakers, what if they need sunscreen," said O'Neil. "We really want to open up the program so parents can address each individual child."
The United Way is working alongside Staples and the Kiwanis Club of Chatham-Kent with their Start to Smart program. They have also partnered with Enbridge, Employment and Social Services, TekSavvy, and Women United to support the program, but the public can also donate through ckgives.ca.
Last year, Operation Backpack distributed almost 1,148 backpacks, and O'Neil believes the demand will be even higher this year.
"I think we had about 20 volunteers and another 10 agencies helping us deliver this program," said O'Neil. "Just really excited to be able to really find something that was definitely a heck of a lot less manpower, and a much more dignified experience for parents and guardians."
