A new park has opened in downtown Walkerton to help shoppers, restaurants and other local businesses deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Municipality of Brockton said in a release on Friday that the space on Durham Street, between Walker’s Landing and the ReMax office, will offer a hand-washing station, a portable toilet, and six appropriately distanced picnic tables, with one being wheelchair accessible.
"The municipality wanted to create an outdoor space where shoppers could take a break and enjoy a snack or meal with the convenience of a hand-washing station and toilet nearby,” said Brockton Mayor Chris Peabody. “In addition to this, I’m delighted to say that many restaurants have expanded their patios this summer."
The release said the space will be limited to groups of less than 10 people, groups are asked to stay six feet apart from each other, and that there must not be more than six people at a table.
The municipality recently purchased the lot and was scheduled to start planning for a new downtown park space in 2021.
