The operator of the Ambassador Bridge says it's eliminating the cost of tolls for all employees working on the frontlines.
Starting on Thursday, all passenger vehicles of essential workers will no longer have to pay to make their daily commute across the bridge.
Matthew Moroun, chairman of the Ambassador Bridge, said the gesture is being done to show appreciation to those working during the COVID-19 crisis.
"We appreciate the men and women on the frontlines who are working to keep us safe," said Moroun in a statement. "We wanted to take this action to try and alleviate some of the stress of a daily commute for essential workers who cross our bridge every day."
The costs associated with the toll relief will be absorbed by the Canadian Transit Company, a Moroun Family Company.
"This is a small thing we can do to show that we see your daily sacrifice and we are grateful,” said Moroun.
How long the initiative will last is dependant on future developments and circumstances, according to the statement.
The border was closed to non-essential travel on March 21 by the United States and Canadian federal governments.
Essential workers crossed the bridge 52,000 times in April alone.
