Walpole Island records first COVID-19 death

Walpole Island First Nation is reporting its first death related to COVID-19.

Chief Dan Miskokomon shared the update over Facebook, sending condolences to the family members. Details about the person have not been released.

"We are saddened by this and send our deepest condolences to the family," said Miskokomon.

As of Friday afternoon, nine of the 11 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Walpole Island have been resolved. In total, 44 residents have been tested for the virus and one test result is pending.

Miskokomon urged residents to maintain COVID-19 preventative measures in order to limit the spread of the virus.

"Be vigilant, take this seriously," he said. "Our community is at a higher risk. We do not want to lose more people."
