Cloth masks suggested

As the province prepares to reopen even more businesses, the Medical Officer of Health for Grey Bruce is recommending everyone wear cloth masks while shopping.

Dr. Ian Arra has suggested retail employees wear cloth masks or other non-medical face coverings and shoppers do the same.

Arra said when worn property, masks or face coverings can reduce the spread of infectious respiratory droplets. He said masks are particularly useful for short periods of time when physical distancing is not possible like when grocery shopping. However, Arra warned that masks are not a substitute for physical distancing and hand washing.

The Grey Bruce Health Unit said the masks should allow you to breathe easily, fit securely with ties or ear loops, maintain its shape when washed, be comfortable and not require frequent adjustment, be made of at least two layers of tightly-woven fabric, and be large enough to completely and comfortably cover your nose and mouth.

You should change your mask as soon as possible if it becomes damp or dirty and disposable masks should be thrown in a lined garbage can, not on the ground.
