Teachers union donates to food banks

The Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario is doing what it can to make sure food banks across the province have what they need during the pandemic.

The union, which represents public elementary school teachers, is donating $75,000 to Feed Ontario and another $25,000 to community food banks.

Feed Ontario is a network of 130 food banks and more than 1,100 affiliate hunger-relief programs and agencies. It serves nearly 335,000 people every month.

"We are living in unprecedented, uncertain, and challenging times," said ETFO President Sam Hammond. "It is critical that we offer support to the most vulnerable in Ontario."

During the COVID-19 crisis, many food banks are adapting their services to meet increasing demand. However, many said their resources are getting low.

ETFO locals are already stepping up to make matched donations in their communities.

The union represents 83,000 elementary public school teachers, occasional teachers, and education professionals.
