Flood watch in effect in CK

Strong wind gusts in the forecast have prompted a flood watch along the Lake Erie shoreline, Erie Shore Drive, and Lighthouse Cove along Lake St. Clair.

The Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority issued the flood watch Thursday morning.

Windy conditions, with gusts coming from the south and southwest, are expected to start Thursday evening and last until Saturday morning. Waves on Lake Erie are predicted to reach 1.5 metres in height, while waves on Lake St. Clair may reach one metre in height.

In addition to the windy conditions, up to 25 millimetres of rain is in the forecast. Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the area on Thursday.

Conservation officials said flooding should be expected in low-lying areas, such as Erie Shore Drive. The area was closed off on March 9 so that repairs could start on the Erie Shore Drive dike.

Residents are being cautioned to avoid the shorelines as conditions get rough.

The flood watch will remain in effect until Sunday.
