Legendary actor Kirk Douglas dies at age 103

Kirk Douglas, one of Hollywood's most iconic actors, has died at the age of 103.

The long-time screen actor's son, two-time Oscar-winning actor-director-producer Michael Douglas, issued a statement to People magazine on Wednesday confirming the passing of his father.

“It is with tremendous sadness that my brothers and I announce that Kirk Douglas left us today at the age of 103,” Michael said in the statement. “To the world, he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to.”

Kirk acted in more than 80 films, most during the industry's "Golden Age", including Spartacus, Town Without Pity, Champion and Detective Story. He retired from acting in 2004. His contributions to film garnered him four Academy Awards (three for best actor), three Academy Award nominations, an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Kirk was born in Amsterdam, New York. He leaves behind his second wife, Anne Buydens, and sons Michael, Joel and Peter.
