Strike planned for Lambton Kent District School Board

Rotating strikes by members of the Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario (ETFO) will impact the Lambton Kent District School Board on Thursday.

On Saturday morning, ETFO members gave their five-day strike notice for January 30.

In addition to the Lambton Kent District School Board, the strike on Thursday will also be held at Durham and Algoma school boards.

The strike will go ahead if the union is unable to reach a collective agreement with the province.

In a statement, ETFO President Sam Hammond criticized the lack of bargaining that has taken place.

“ETFO is very disappointed that Ford’s Education Minister Lecce has not come back to the bargaining table to negotiate key issues affecting students, student learning and educators,” said Hammond. “It is now 37 days since ETFO’s last bargaining session on December 19, 2019."

Lecce previously said his government is not willing to budge on its offer of a one per cent increase.

However, the union insisted its job action is not about money and that the strikes are about class sizes, supports for special needs children, and violence in the classroom.
