The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance has a new doctor heading up its ophthalmology department.
A statement from the health alliance said Dr. Elizabeth Haddad, general surgeon and chief of surgery, is taking over as the acting head of the department at the hospital after Dr. Christopher Anjema resigned from the position effective July 19, 2019.
The health alliance did not provide any specific reasons for Dr. Anjema's resignation, saying only that "we would like to extend our gratitude for his valuable contribution to this program over the years."
Blackburn News attempted to reach Anjema at his office in Chatham Friday morning, but he was not immediately available for comment.
The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) is currently conducting an investigation into "information regarding Dr. Anjema's standard of practice", but there is no indication that was a determining factor in his decision to resign from his post at the CKHA. Anjema still has hospital privileges at the health alliance.
As a result of the CPSO's ongoing investigation, officials have imposed a restriction on Anjema, requiring him to "practise, with respect to blepharoplasty procedures, under the guidance of a Clinical Supervisor acceptable to the College."
Anjema was also recently named in a pair of ongoing investigative reports on Ontario’s top-billing doctors published by the Toronto Star, which said he billed OHIP $4.1 million in the 2017-2018 fiscal year and more than $31 million since 2011.
