A suspended Chatham-Kent police officer is expected to enter a plea in the new year in regards to a sexual assault case.
Constable Andrew Jaconelli has been charged with two counts of sexual assault and one count of assault with a weapon. His charges date back to November of 2017 and August of 2018 when he was off-duty.
Jaconelli will be in court on January 17, 2020 for a plea and resolution.
Usually, a plea and resolution involve a negotiated agreement between a prosecutor, an accused, and his or her lawyer to settle a criminal case. The judge can accept a guilty plea and sentence the criminal to a lesser charge or narrow the issues to be determined at trial.
Jaconelli has been suspended from the police force with pay since December 14, 2018, after he was charged. CK police have also charged Jaconelli with two counts of discreditable conduct under the Police Services Act and the Professional Standards Branch is conducting more internal investigations into the matter.
The names of the victims are being protected by a publication ban.
Jaconelli has been out on bail since January.
