Students and staff in the Lambton Kent District School Board will recognize National Indigenous Peoples Day on Friday.
The school board issued a release, which read they're committed to instilling an understanding of Indigenous histories and traditions within its schools, in support of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada: Calls to Action.
“The LKDSB appreciates the ongoing partnerships with our local First Nation communities as we work together to support the education and understanding of Indigenous histories and perspectives,” said Director Jim Costello.
This comes shortly after the school board signed an Education Services Agreement with officials from Walpole Island First Nation on Wednesday.
“The signing of the Education Services Agreement marks the continuation of the strong partnership between Walpole Island First Nation and the Lambton Kent District School Board,” said Walpole Island First Nation Chief Dan Miskokomon. “We appreciate the cooperative efforts of those involved in the development of the agreement and we look forward to continuing to work together to provide these educational services.”
The agreement, which will remain in effect until 2022, reaffirms that schools under the LKDSB will support current services related to Indigenous practices.
“Through the Education Services Agreement, the LKDSB and Walpole Island First Nation will work collaboratively to support the academic achievement and well-being for Indigenous students, as well as provide opportunities for all students to learn and understand the history and culture of Walpole Island First Nation,” said Chair Jane Bryce.
This is the third agreement to be signed by the two parties. The first agreement was signed back in 2007.
