Chatham-Kent is below average in almost every crime statistic and would rank among the lowest in total crime, if it wasn't for break and enters.
McLean's Magazine released its list of "Most Dangerous Places in Canada," and while Chatham-Kent ranked 205 out of 237 in the five year change in crime rate, it's at 93 out of 237 in total crime in 2017.
The main contributor to the high ranking appears to be break and enters, where CK ranks ninth in the country and first in Ontario. The municipality is over double the national average seeing 1,004.46 break and enters per 100,000 people compared to Canada's average of 438.51.
The only other crime the municipality saw an increase in was cocaine trafficking at 8.53 per 100,000 people, but it was still well below the nation's average of 19.73.
When it comes to violent crimes, Chatham-Kent is one of the safest in the country ranking 170 out of 237.
Assault rate, sexual assault rate, impaired driving and other controlled drugs and substances trafficking were less than half the Canadian average. Firearms offenses were almost non-existent at 0.95 per 100,000 people compared to 6.79 nationally. There were also no homicides reported in the municipality in 2017.
