West Nile Virus Found In Wallaceburg Mosquitoes

Some mosquitoes in the Wallaceburg area have tested positive for West Nile virus.

The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit says the infected mosquitoes were collected from a trap last week. This comes shortly after other traps in Chatham, Blenheim, and Dresden also tested positive for the virus.

"Most people infected with the virus have no symptoms at all, or they have flu-like symptoms," as stated in a media release sent from the health unit. "Those with more severe illness may experience a stiff neck, nausea, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, and lack of coordination or paralysis."

Although the chance of a person contracting West Nile virus from a mosquito is low, health officials do recommend taking certain precautions. Protective measures include using insect repellent with DEET and wearing light-coloured clothing.

Residents should also consider getting rid of standing water from their property as it is a possible breeding site for mosquitoes.
