Dog Tag Enforcement Blitz On The Way

Residents might get a visit from officials with Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) this month to make sure all dogs have a 2018 dog tag, at the request of the municipality.

As outlined in the Responsible Animal Ownership bylaw, dogs must have a tag by March 31 of every year.

Not having a 2018 municipal dog tag could result in a $240 fine. A dog licence costs $38 for spayed/neutered dogs, or $48 for those that aren't.

Nancy Havens, manager of licensing services, stated in a press release that money paid to the municipality for tags goes towards Chatham-Kent's Dog Control Program. One of the things this program does is provide food and care for lost or stray dogs.

Residents should note that bylaw enforcement officers will be identified by their PAWR uniforms and identification name tags. The officers will also be driving a vehicle marked with "PAWR Animal Control".

Municipal officials say bylaw enforcement officers "will not be selling tags at the door." However, there's still time to buy 2018 dog tags. Pet owners can do so by visiting a municipal service centre. Residents who don't have a dog anymore are also asked to deactivate a dog licence account by calling 519-360-1998.
