"I won it because of dedication towards track and a lot of improvement since last year," he says. "Like last year, I got to OFSAA as part of a relay team and this year, I made it individually."

Douma says it was quite a surprise for him.

"Apparently everyone in my family knew about it except for me," says Douma. "I'm so happy and I'm so thankful for the school for giving me these opportunities."

Grade 11 student Payton Sabourin was the winner of the Female Athlete of the Year award. She competes in cross country running, soccer, hockey, and track and field.

"It feels pretty good knowing there are a lot of other athletes who could have won it," she says.
