CK Police Had Fewer Public Complaints In 2017

Police complaints appear to be trending in the right direction in Chatham-Kent.

Chatham-Kent police had 15 public complaints last year. That's two fewer than 2016 and five less than 2015.

Ten of the complaints were for conduct and five were service complaints.

A police report shows that nine of the complaints were refused by The Office of the Independent Police Review Director, which oversees public complaints, because once they were examined, they were dropped.

The others were either withdrawn at the request of the complainant, unsubstantiated or led to an informal resolution with the officer and the complainant agreeing to the outcome.

There were also 74 Chief's Complaint investigations in 2017, but there were significantly fewer charges or police act hearings than the year before. There were three informal disciplinary hearings last year compared to 12 charges and hearings in 2016.

There are 164 police officers in Chatham-Kent.
