The FBI has raided the office of a personal lawyer to the president of the United States.
According to CNN, the U.S. law enforcement agency has seized a number of attorney-client communications from the office of Michael Cohen, who has been a long-time lawyer and confidant to President Donald Trump.
Cohen's lawyer Stephen Ryan issued a statement that said he had been told by federal prosecutors that the raid stemmed partially from a referral by the office of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Ryan called the search "completely inappropriate and unnecessary" in his statement.
Mueller is currently leading an investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 U.S. elections, including possible collusion between Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and the Russian government.
Cohen admitted earlier this year to setting up a limited liability company in 2016 to pay hush money to pornstar Stormy Daniels, who allegedly had an affair with Trump approximately ten years ago. The White House has denied the allegations.
