Stop Turbine Drilling Now Before People Get Sick, Says MPP

The MPP for Lambton-Kent-Middlesex has once again called for an immediate halt to pile driving for the North Kent 1 turbine project in Chatham-Kent.

Monte McNaughton delivered a glass of turbid water to Environment Minister Chris Ballard in the legislature Tuesday, to show him what 16 families are getting from their wells since drilling began.

Residents say drilling into black shale bedrock is stirring up heavy metals known to be health hazards and polluting their water that was crystal clear before construction began.

"This problem is growing as they continue to build turbines at the North Kent project," says McNaughton. "Clearly, if these turbines were being built in the GTA and water wells were affected, the government would have shut them down."

McNaughton says it's just another example of the liberal government's disrespect to families in rural Ontario.

"These turbines are being built to generate electricity we don't need, and they're only going to contribute to driving hydro costs even higher," he says. "This is a bad decision by Kathleen Wynn economically, environmentally, and for the health and well being of my constituents."

Developer Samsung Renewable Energy has previously said at two public meetings that construction has had no impact on area water wells.
