One of the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission was better education on First Nations treaty and treaty relationships.
Students with the Lambton Kent District School Board are learning about treaties during this, Treaties Recognition Week.
Canada's aboriginals signed 11 numbered treaties with the Crown between 1871 and 1921, giving up wide swaths of land in exchange for certain rights and promises.
"We have a diverse population of Indigenous students, leaders and staff in the Board who enrich our classrooms and workplaces every day," says Director Jim Costello. "Treaties Recognition Week is an opportunity to reaffirm the importance of learning and understanding Indigenous issues, histories and perspectives in a safe and caring learning environment."
This week also marks the official implementation of the Traditional Territorial Acknowledgement across the public school board.
It is now part of opening exercises in schools, recognizing the traditional lands of the four First Nations within the Board's catchment area: Aamjiwnaang, Kettle & Stony Point, Walpole Island and Delaware Nation.
