Upgrades are on the way for the Blenheim Wastewater Treatment Plant, in an effort to reduce the amount of phosphorus entering the Great Lakes.
The Chatham-Kent Public Utilities Commission has announced that the facility will be getting a $450,000 upgrade to the treatment process.
"The Blenheim Wastewater Treatment Plant, located at 19819 Lagoon Rd, will be undergoing upgrades to the chemical treatment system and headworks system," the CK PUC says in a news release. "The plant was last upgraded in 1997."
Construction at the plant is expected to start in October and finish by July 2018.
Plans for the upgrades stems from the Clean Water and Wastewater Fund (CWWF), which has been established through the 2016 Federal Budget.
"The federal government’s contribution is 50% of the eligible project costs, with the province contributing 25% and the remaining 25% to be met by CK PUC," the PUC says. "This project is one of 12 such projects throughout the municipality that fits the CWWF requirements."
The PUC also states that of the $9.2-million being spent on all of the projects, the federal and provincial levels of government are putting in $6.9-million.
