CK Postal Workers Concerned About Unleashed Dogs

With the warm weather here, Chatham-Kent postal workers are asking dog owners to keep their safety in mind.

Canada Post letter carrier Paul O'Neill says there have been many incidents involving staff getting bit by dogs that weren't properly leashed or locked indoors.

He says safety is a growing concern for postal workers -- especially during the summer months.

"This time of year there's a lot of heat and people have their doors open, their pets out and in the yards, or just have their screen door closed" says O'Neill. "They're thinking that their dog is safe then along comes a letter carrier and suddenly there's an issue that nobody wants to deal with."

O'Neill says safety should be the community's number one priority.

"We'd like to see it where people just kind of have that in mind and keep their pets secure whether it be on a leash or behind a firm secure door. Screen doors are wonderful to let the air through but they can sometimes allow a dog to through as well, and that's an issue for everybody's safety," he adds.

O'Neill says he hears of at least one incident per month involving a CK postal worker being bit or attacked by an unleashed dog.
