Among the nearly 12-million people who watched the Tragically Hip's final concert, 850 Chatham-Kent residents packed the Capitol Theatre for a memorable night.
As it turns out, a couple local groups will benefit from the Saturday night screening.
"After I paid all of my expenses, we raised about $5,300," says organizer Jay Denorer. "It'll go towards Chatham-Kent Victims Services, and the Sunnybrook Foundation."
The event was one of a couple screenings of the Hip concert in Chatham-Kent, which streamed the original broadcast from the CBC. Under CBC rules, organizers could only allow admission by donation. Attendees at the Capitol who spent more than $10 got a poster, and there were also t-shirts for sale.
But Denorer says the experience itself was easily the biggest takeaway from the night.
"I was manning the door so everyone else could go in and watch the concert. I left the door and I walked inside the theatre. Just getting the vibe from the people inside, and listening to the way Gord Downie sang and the way the band played, it was basically electrifying," says Denorer.
