A local swim club anticipates a big boost in registration thanks to Canada's early success in Olympic Swimming.
With Canadian swimmers already winning three medals in Rio, Chatham Y Pool Sharks Head Coach Kyle Pinsonneault hopes to have 50 new swimmers at this year's tryouts.
"It's already three times the number [of medals] we had at the last Olympics," says Pinsonneault. "I think three medals already is huge, including for Ontario, because most of the athletes that did win were from here. So hopefully it inspires some swimmers here in Chatham-Kent."
LaSalle's Kylie Masse won a bronze in the 100m backstroke Monday. Pinsonneault believes the two medals from 16-year-old Penny Oleksiak is also encouraging for the future of Canadian swimming.
"I think we're going to see bigger things happen in 2020 as well. Women's swimming is definitely huge right now. The hype and the success that they're having, it's just the beginning," says Pinsonneault.
