Organizers hope a series of new "little libraries" in Chatham will get kids reading and keep them out of trouble.
The Chatham Central Neighbourhood Association has set up two mailboxes where residents can exchange and share books with other community members.
Marjorie Crew is the community safety and well-being project coordinator with the Chatham-Kent Police Service. She says the one at Raleigh St's Hope House is just steps away from St. Joseph Catholic School.
"It's getting those kids involved, teaching them to be good stewards of the books and share literacy with their friends," says Crew. "Kids that read are kids that go on in life, building themselves and building communities."
The boxes are certified with the Little Free Library program, which has little libraries placed across the country. According to residents, another one set up at 195 West St. in Chatham has already seen plenty of traffic.
Organizers hoping to put up another one at BME Freedom Park soon.
