Police Tracking ATV Offences

Chatham-Kent police are keeping a close eye on ATV operators, especially now that there's a new off-road vehicle by-law in place.

Police Chief Gary Conn says they responded to 12 incidents in March, but only one of them was a collision, and the driver of the vehicle sustained non-life threatening injuries.

"It's my plan to provide quarterly reports for the police service board and then at the end of the year pilot project, I'll to back to council and provide an overall report," says Conn.

Conn says he'll continue to gather stats on incidents involving ATVs and plans to provide quarterly updates at police service board meetings throughout the year.

He also intends to provide an overall report to council once the one-year by-law wraps up on March 7, 2017.

March 2016 ATV incidents by the numbers:

- Police responded to one motor vehicle collision

- Officers issued four cautions for issues including: not wearing helmets, driving after dark, underage driving, and not having a proper permit

- Police laid four criminal code charges in regards to ATVs (eg. dangerous driving)

- Officers handed out 11 provincial offence notices (tickets) for offences involving ATVs
