Chatham-Kent staff say there's no need for a four-way stop at Keil Dr. and McNaughton.
After a traffic study completed in November, officials have discovered the intersection does not meet the requirements for more stop signs or lights. Director of Engineering and Transportation Adam Sullo says they consider a number of factors set out by the Ontario Traffic Manual.
"We look at volume on both roads, volume in comparison to the two streets, and traffic accident data," says Sullo.
Chatham councillors had expressed concern that the intersection was confusing to motorists. The confusion lies in who has the right of way. But Sullo says this is a tough factor to quantify with their standards.
"If we start going away from standards, then what becomes the standard? We don't want to create standards arbitrarily, we want to go by the Ontario Traffic Manual," explains Sullo.
Sullo adds recent landscaping and tree removal efforts have already helped with the traffic flow. There have been 18 accidents at the intersection since 2008.
