RCMP In Windsor Has Different Focus

Nestled in between multi-million dollar homes on Riverside Dr., not many know the full extent of what the RCMP does here in Windsor.

They say that's because much of what they do involves large, extensive drug investigations.

Roughly 30 ground officers also work closely with the Canada Border Services Agency on smuggling.

Detachment Commander Kevin Keane says they focus more on criminal organizations instead of the crime itself.

"We work with other police agencies both in Canada and the [U.S.] to look at the organized crime, the type of crime that doesn't known a jurisdiction... it's just all open game to them," he says.

The RCMP branch in Windsor played a role in a large cocaine bust at the Ambassador Bridge over the summer.

"We try to do the background investigation where we can find linkages from the person who is actually driving the truck to the greater network, both people who are distributing in Canada and importing it from places far afield," Keane says.

Another ten RCMP officers are assigned to the Ship Rider program, focusing on criminality along the Detroit River.
