Crime Stoppers Warns Of Phone Scam

The public is being asked to be wary after numerous complaints about an ongoing telephone scam.

Chatham-Kent Crime Stoppers says a number of people have reported receiving aggressive phone calls from a group identifying themselves as the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

The caller, who reportedly has a strong ethnic accent, requests personal information before advising that there is an outstanding tax balance which requires an immediate wire transfer payment.

The victim is then threatened with arrest or seizure of assets if they don't comply with the demands.

Crime Stoppers is reminding everyone that the CRA will never contact you directly by phone, as all communications are done by mail. As well, CRA employees never threaten their clients.

Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 519-351-8477 or 1-800-222-8477.
