The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance is reviewing its options in erasing a projected $1.8-million deficit for the end of the fiscal year in March. Chief Operation and Financial Officer Sarah Padfield tells BlackburnNews.com the hospital was notified in September it was getting $2.5-million less from the ministry than expected as part of the change to a population based funding model. "We're really going to have to look at programs and services right across the organization," says Padfield. "We're not in any position right now to make any decisions." Padfield says finding efficiencies will be key in eliminating the budget shortfall. "I think we can look at the overall services across Chatham-Kent and figure out how best to meet community needs and look at how much funding is coming in, not just for hospital services, but for all services," says Padfield. "We know we're moving to more integrated health systems." Padfield adds CKHA is working with the Erie-St. Clair LHIN and the ministry in sorting out a business case that will see the hospital move back to balance. A submission is set to be made to the LHIN by the end of January of the new year so the hospital will be given approval to carry its deficit. The hospital has a current deficit of just under $1-million.
