The Chatham-Kent fire department has unveiled a new electronic training tool that will allow more members of the public to learn to use fire extinguishers.
The device simulates a fire on a screen and reacts to an electronic extinguisher .
"We can take this inside and use it with persons who are not able to go outside or are not comfortable using a live fire demonstration," says Assistant Fire Chief Alan DeVillaer. "This gives all the advantages of the proper techniques of using a fire extinguisher without the mess the smoke and the flame."
DeVillaer says another training device that does use real flames and a real extinguisher is not being replaced, but both will be used in different situations.
The fire service bought the device with the help of a $12,700 donation from Enbridge Green Power.
