Chatham, A City Of The Future

Chatham has made a global list highlighting cities representing the future of business.

FDI Intelligence magazine's "American Cities of the Future" is a ranking of 421 cities in the Americas, with Chatham named one of the "most business friendly."

Chatham-Kent's Director of Economic Development Michael Burton says it's exciting to see Chatham-Kent's name along with the likes of Toronto, Calgary and Ottawa.

"It kind of puts on on par with many other locations that are larger, but may not have the same characteristics or assets we have that can attract investment," he says.

Other categories listed include economic potential, connectivity and cost effectiveness. Entries were divided into major, mid-sized and even micro-cities.

Burton adds Chatham's proximity to other major markets is important as well, with businesses in the area getting access to a pool of 250,000 skilled workers to choose from.

"People from Lakeshore, for example, would usually travel to Chatham or Wallaceburg. So our availability of skilled labour is pretty competitive," he says.

The nearby cities of Windsor and Sarnia also made the list in the "business friendliness" category.
