West Nile In Tilbury Area

The first positive test for West Nile Virus in Chatham-Kent this year is a reminder to take steps to avoid mosquitoes and eliminate pools of standing water they need to reproduce.

Public Health Inspector Mike Hatten says the mosquito that tested positive was caught in the Tilbury area.

"This is fairly normal, we sometimes see (positive tests) towards the end of July but it has been a little cooler this summer too and that makes a difference," he says. "West Nile Virus is here and we know it is around, just because a trap is negative doesn't mean it's not here. It's more of an indicator to let us know in a specific area it's a little worse right now."

Hatten says there have been no human exposures reported so far this year in Chatham-Kent.
